Why Bike or Walk?

Some of the reasons might surprise you! Watch this video to learn more.

Ask Your Employer for a Bicycle Commuter Benefit - Available Through the IRS

The Bicycle Commuter Benefit (BCB) is intended to provide a benefit for employees who cycle which is comparable to the transportation benefits for employees using transit or driving. The BCB is a nationally recognized tax provision as of January 1, 2009. Employers are voluntarily adopting this program to reimburse up to $20 per month, per bicycle commuter for reasonable expenses incurred because of their commute to work by bike.

Businesses that implement the BCB set up their own strategy for administering the program. As a guideline, a business should develop a policy which defines "commuter," requires employees to keep their receipts and defines how often the tax exempt wage payments will be made. Employees should be responsible for all paperwork (e.g., collecting receipts and filling out monthly reimbursement cards) and the employer should be responsible for making regular payments and accounting for IRS purposes.

Click here for a handout you can download that details the BCB or visit the League of American Cyclists website for answers to frequently asked questions.
